NAUGATUCK, CT (WFSB) -
Two people were arrested for a robbery at the People's Bank inside Stop & Shop in Naugatuck Saturday.
Police said the pair, later identified as 25-year-old Joshua Habib and 22-year-old Brianna McCarthy, were behaving suspiciously in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Rubber Avenue.
Witnesses saw a woman wearing a red wig run out of the store and into a silver Saturn with California license plates. Police said the car took off on Field Street.
An off-duty officer saw a car matching the description driving erratically on Allerton Road and turned around to follow the suspects. The officer noted that the car now had Connecticut plates.
State police arrested the couple as they pulled in to a private home in Litchfield.
The pair confessed to the crime and led detectives to the discarded red wig and the California license plate used in the robbery.
Police also said the couple tried to use a diversion 911 call about a woman being abducted at gunpoint on Ward Street in Naugatuck prior to the robbery.
Habib and McCarthy are facing several charges including robbery and falsely reporting of an incident.
