Murphy hopes to avoid primary in Conn. Senate race

SEYMOUR, CT (AP) -

U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy is urging Democrats to avoid a primary and rally behind him in Connecticut's U.S. Senate race.

During visits to local Democratic town committees, Murphy says the party needs to consider who is the most electable and can battle Republican Linda McMahon, the wealthy former wrestling executive who spent $50 million on her last Senate race.

Murphy currently leads two other Democrats - former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and Stamford state Rep. William Tong - in fundraising. He says he's being backed by top Democrats and unions.

Bysiewicz and Tong, however, say not so fast. Both said they plan to remain in the race after the May 12 state convention and believe they offer the voters a choice. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 14.
