ENFIELD, CT (WFSB) -
Enfield residents are being warned to be on the lookout after a rabid raccoon attacked three people this weekend including an Animal Control Officer.
Around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, the Enfield Animal Control was notified by a resident that a raccoon had attacked them on State Street.
The resident told Enfield Animal Control Officers that they were not bitten and were able to fend the animal off.
The raccoon was not located in the area and officers notified residents of the incident. Nearly three hours later, an officer responded to another call on Betty Road after a raccoon was seen in the area acting strangely.
The raccoon went towards the resident; however, they were able to fend the animal off with a stick and made it inside.
When the officer arrived, the raccoon was still in the area and charged at the officer.
The officer then caught the raccoon and it was euthanized and submitted for rabies testing.
Those results came back positive for rabies.
As a result, officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for any animal that is acting strangely.
Signs of rabies include fever, loss of appetite, irritability, unusual vocalization, change in behavior, restlessness, jumping at noises, trouble walking, excessive salivation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, stupors or unprovoked aggression.
