WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) -
Waterbury Hospital announced Tuesday that in addition to eliminating open positions and reducing hours, 75 people will be laid off in response to continuing financial challenges.
"This is a sad day for our organization," said hospital President/CEO Darlene Stromstad, "This is a significant reduction. I am asking all local businesses that are hiring to please consider our employees."
Waterbury Hospital officials said that the total reduction amounts to nearly 5 percent of the hospital's workforce of 1,700.
In addition to the 75 layoffs, the hospital will eliminate 20 open position and decrease hours for 15 employees.
"Our focus is on non-direct patient care areas to ensure that the quality of care our patients have come to depend on is not interrupted," Stromstad said.
Waterbury Hospital officials said that the reduction includes 22 management level positions, as well as educators, clerical and support staff and union and nonunion individuals.
In all, Waterbury Hospital officials said, the hospital expects to save approximately $4.4 million through these reductions.
