HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
In an attempt to deal with a prolonged decline in mail delivery, the United States Postal Service will close its Stamford and Wallingford processing centers and move all operations to other locations.
First-class mail from the Wallingford center will go to the Hartford Processing and Distribution Center in Hartford, CT, while parcels and flats (magazines and large envelopes) will go to the processing facility in Springfield MA, according to postal officials
In addition, all mail operations at the Stamford center will move to the Westchester, NY.
The Postal Service said it has seen a 25 percent decline in first-class mail volume since 2006.
Specific dates for the transition were not give. Until then the transitions are complete residential and business mailers will continue to be served through the current facilities, it said.
In December 2011, the Postal Service agreed to impose a moratorium on closing or consolidating post offices and mail processing facilities before May 15, 2012, to give Congress and the Obama Administration the opportunity to enact an alternative plan.
In the meantime, it has conducted reviews of its facilities, including public notifications, public input meetings and consideration of public comments.
