Connecticut Congressman John Larson will be stopping in Winsted to present a long-overdue Purple Heart medal to a Vietnam War veteran.
Larson is set to present the medal to 61-year-old Gerald Winn on Monday morning at VFW Post 296 in his hometown of Winsted.
Winn enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1968 and was wounded in Vietnam in January 1970 after serving there for eight months.
The Republican-American of Waterbury reported that local VFW officials say Winn was injured by a land mine and sent home after multiple surgeries. The VFW said Winn returned to Winsted without being recognized for his service, because he didn't want to remember the atrocities of war and his prolonged hospitalization.
Winn retired from his Postal Service job six years ago.
