CANTON, CT (WFSB) -

The town of Canton is hosting a SKYWARN Weather Spotter training class Wednesday.

Town officials said the class will be held at 7 p.m. at the Community Center.

Severe weather effects are felt by most Americans every year. So, to obtain critical weather information, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service, as well as the United States Department of Commerce established the SKYWARN program.

It's a volunteer program with more than 290,000 trained severe weather spotters.

The volunteers will keep local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.
