NEW BRITAIN, CT (AP) -
U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz discussed ways to address the nation's budget deficit and fix the economy during their first head-to-head debate since Murphy garnered the Democratic Party's endorsement.
The two faced off Thursday at Central Connecticut State University in a debate sponsored by public radio station WNPR-FM.
Murphy said the federal government needs to focus more on rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. He said it would provide a much-needed boost to the struggling construction industry.
Both say a public-private infrastructure bank could help finance the work.
Bysiewicz said dysfunction in Washington is one of main reasons\ why Congress has not passed a major transportation improvement bill.
Murphy blamed the House Republicans.
The state's primary will be held Aug. 14.
