'Beryl' could form this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -
The Atlantic hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but meteorologists have been keeping an eye out for the possibility of Beryl forming off the eastern seaboard.
Officials from the National Hurricane Center in Miami have upgraded the chance of the low pressure system forming a tropical system to 80 percent.
The low is currently centered about 275 miles southeast of the coast of the Carolinas and is currently producing gale-force winds to the northeast and southeast of the center.
The low-pressure system has gradually become better organized, but the thunderstorm activity inside the storm remains unorganized.
NHC officials said the storm system has an 80 percent chance of becoming Beryl within the next 48 hours.
The storm system isn't expected to move much on Friday, but a west-southwest or southwestward motion should begin on Saturday and continue through Sunday.
People along the coast from northeastern Florida to the Carolina coast should begin to monitor the system over the Memorial Day weekend.
