CLARKSVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Now that Summer vacation is in full swing, especially for students, it's time to plan those Summer vacations and outings. But sometimes a family's budget can dictate the types of fun outings that can be taken.
Starting this week I begin a series on inexpensive and even sometimes, free events, that can come to the rescue to get you through the hot Summer ahead without heating up your spending.
Our first Summertime Savings Package is at Bass Pro Shops! Their 'Family Summer Camp' has been around for about four years now. If you're looking for something easy and fun to do that's also cheap...I mean FREE, this one may be for you!
Tina Tucker, special events and promotions coordinator for Bass Pro Shops in Clarksville, says that the event is fun for the whole family. "We have seminars every hour on different topics from archer to bird watching (to) fishing."
Those seminars are only about 20 minutes so kids of any age will probably be able to stay focused through the whole thing. After the seminars, your kids will get the chance to use what they have learned to win special prizes!
"They go on this little scavenger hunt. When they find the answer to the questions and they come back, they can earn a pin."
The correct answer will get your child a metal Bass Pro Shops pin displaying the topic they've learned about, such as archery, sharp shooting or fishing to name a few. They can display their pins on a special lanyard given to all participants.
Crafts will also be offered every day of camp and the family can get their picture taken together for free too! Fishing is another activity the kids along with Mom and Dad can enjoy. Practice your casting technique on casting buckets or try the real thing in the live fish pond located near Bass Pro Shops huge aquarium.
If all that's not enough, on Saturday evenings you can cook your very own smores over an open fire outside from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
"We will have a campfire in our fire pit. We'll have the real Kraft marshmallows, real Hershey chocolate, the real graham crackers and everybody can make their own smores and eat it and have a good time doing it!"
Tucker says its not just all fun for the kids and parents, but the events are geared to also teach about safety in the outdoors along with conservation.
"We try to teach the kids at a lot of these seminars that it's not only about what you're doing out there, but how you can keep the legacy going on for future generations."
The 'Family Summer Camps' at Bass Pro Shops - Clarksville, run every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday through July 15th. All activities are absolutely free! To find out more, you can go here to the Bass Pro Shops - Clarksville website.
