Officials issue air quality alert

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has issued an unhealthy air quality forecast for sensitive groups for Wednesday and Thursday due to concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution for Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London Counties.

Officials said the forecast means those with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, will have an increased likelihood of respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort.

When air pollution levels are predicted to be unhealthy for sensitive groups the DEEP recommends:

  • Conserving electricity by setting air conditioners to 78°F
  • "Wait til 8" to use energy intensive appliances like washing machines, dryers and dishwashers
  • Driving less by carpooling or using public transit
  • Telecommuting if possible
  • Refueling your vehicle after dusk and never idling a vehicle unnecessarily
