Heat Index Chart from the National Weather Service
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB/AP) -
Scorching temperatures and high humidity took hold of Connecticut on Wednesday and the record high temperature at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks was broken when it hit 97 degrees by 4 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory Wednesday for the Hartford area and southwest Connecticut, where temperatures in the 90s and high humidity could bring heat index values over 100.
As a result of the high temps, cooling centers have been opened across Connecticut for residents without fans and/or air conditioning to go and cool off.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is forecasting unhealthy air quality for "sensitive groups" in Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties.
The weather service says temperatures could break daily records Wednesday and Thursday. The record at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks for each of those dates is 96 degrees.
The high for June at Bradley has reached 100 degrees twice: June 26, 1952, and June 30, 1964.
The weather service says highs could exceed that before a cold front arrives later this week.
