Red Cross issues emergency call for blood donors

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood donors of all types after they received 50,000 fewer donations than anticipated in June.

The Red Cross is looking for all blood types, but especially O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative donations.

Officials said the unseasonably early start to spring may have been a contributing factor to this year's shortage.  They feel many regular donors may have gotten started early on outdoor activities.  In addition, many corporate sponsors are not able to host drives during the summer due to vacations.

If you are interested in donating, please contact the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive or make an appointment.
