FARMINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A teenager that was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Route 4 in Farmington on Monday has died.

Mateusz Maciulewski suffered serious injuries after being struck by the vehicle after he got off a bus and was attempting to cross the street near the University of Connecticut Medical Center.

Route 4 was closed immediately after the crash so emergency crews could respond to the scene and investigate.

Throughout the day, friends were praying for Maciulewski and his Facebook wall was filled with words of encouragement and well wishes.

But, the somber news was released late in the day Tuesday that Maciulewski succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford.

Those messages changed from encouragement to "only the good die young" and "you will be remembered."

The principal at Farmington High School, where Maciulewski attended classes, said he was an energetic freshman who recently discovered he had a passion and wanted very much to be on the school's crew team.

Grief counselors are being made available at Farmington High School for the week so students can get help in trying to cope with the sudden and tragic loss.

As for the driver of the car who hit Maciulewski while he was crossing Route 4, he stopped after the incident and is fully cooperating with police during the investigation.
