HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Connecticut State Police remain on the scene of an officer-involved double shooting in Hartford that occurred Wednesday morning.
One of the men shot by the officer died, and the other was taken to Hartford Hospital for surgery.
State police said three officers with the Quality of Life Task Force were on duty when they said they spotted a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of a housing complex.
They said when they approached the vehicle, the driver smashed into one of the cruisers and then drove right at them.
The officer then opened fire, hitting the two suspects in the front seats.
"I heard five shots and car tires screeching and someone speeding off," said Jovanie Ortiz.
The driver continued and smashed into one of the apartments nearby.
Luckily, police said, everyone in the apartment was asleep on the second floor.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene; the passenger was wounded and brought to Hartford Hospital.
State police said there was a third person in the vehicle in the back seat who was not injured and was taken in for questioning.
"It's crazy that people do crazy stuff like that," said Hartford resident Elizabeth Sanchez. "You always see the news and it's always somewhere else. It's not where you live at."
State police said all three men were in a vehicle that was stolen from the parking lot of a local hospital two days ago.
The Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross is now assisting five people in two families in the apartment that was hit by the vehicle.
