Frankie Resto, the man being accused of robbing a store in Meriden and shooting and killing its 70-year-old store clerk even though he handed over money from the register, appeared in court Friday.
Resto was picked up from a police station in Brooklyn, NY, on Thursday and was brought back to Connecticut after spending 11 days on the run.
The senseless crime outraged the family of Ibrahim Ghazal, as well as the community.
Police launched a massive manhunt for Resto, who they believe is the man seen on store surveillance shooting the 70-year-old native of Jordan, despite Ghazal giving the suspect the money from inside his convenience store cash register.
Family members of Ghazal said he bought the store just three weeks earlier and was killed days before his birthday.
As Resto was being led into the courtroom, Ghazal's daughter began to cry, and Resto just responded by giving her a smirk. During the hearing, Resto said his co-defendant, Willie Breyette, of New Britain, had nothing to do with the killing and should be set free.
"I'm not doing good at all because he killed my father," said Tharwat Ghazal. "He stared at my eyes for two minutes. He's just evil."
Ibrahim Ghazal's loving wife, six children and nine grandchildren are all left with huge holes in their hearts knowing he's gone forever and are now left with the most important question: Why?
"He gave him the money, and he took it in one hand, and shot him in the other," Tharwat said. "It's not fair."
Relatives of Resto cried as they left the courthouse, and one of them said he's "not a monster."
Resto was ordered held on $3.1 million bond.
He's going to have his own room (in jail), TV, a newspaper," Tharwat said. "He's going to be happy, and he killed my father."
