PLAINVILLE, CT (WFSB) -

Nearly 3,000 people came out to support the annual Petit Family Foundation Road Race on Sunday morning in Plainville.

The Petit Family Foundation was started after Dr. William Petit's wife and two daughters were killed in a home invasion back in 2007.

Dr. Petit said the mission of the foundation is to continue the legacy of his family members, by encouraging young women to study science and help people suffering from chronic illnesses and those affected by violence.

Sunday's event is the foundation's largest fundraiser of the year. According to Petit, all of the money raised stays within Connecticut.

"We made our first signature six-figure grant to the Channel 3 Kids Camp to replace the medical building," said Petit, "It serves over 4,000 kids a year."

According to early estimates, this weekend's race raised nearly $225,000.
