NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
New Haven city officials spent Tuesday morning removing dozens of chickens and goats from inside a home.
The conditions inside the home were described by officials as "deplorable."
When officials arrived at the home, at first it didn't seem like anything was out of the ordinary, but when they opened a door to the basement, the smell was overwhelming.
Inside the basement, chickens were running free.
New Haven officials said at least 24 chickens were running around. Some were caged and caked in their own waste.
The landlord said he was horrified.
At first, officials said, nobody was answering the door to the home, but the city was able to get one of the tenants on the phone who helped him get in touch with the woman inside because there was information that may have been more than just chickens inside the home.
The information proved to be true.
In addition to the two dozen chickens, two goats were seized from inside the home.
All of the animals were being brought to a farm in Coventry and the landlord said he will begin the eviction process for is tenants.
The city said there will be no fines or criminal charges brought against anyone.
