ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

Damage reports have been made across Connecticut after powerful storms made their way through the state on Wednesday afternoon.

At the height of the storm, more than 35,000 Connecticut Light and Power customers were in the dark. At 9:30 p.m. CLP reported just over 10,000 customers were still without power.

Severe thunderstorms started to pop up in and around Connecticut just after 1 p.m., prompting the first severe weather warnings to be issued.

The severe weather was nonstop for hours.

Large hail was reported in communities across Connecticut including Newington, Cromwell, Middletown and Litchfield.

In addition to the hail, strong winds have knocked trees over bringing power lines with them. Reports of trees down have been made in places like New Britain, Litchfield, Harwinton, Portland and Middletown.

Cromwell was one of the hardest hit communities. On Crest Drive, one homeowner had a large tree uprooted by the strong winds that swept across the state.

Residents said trees and wires were brought down in multiple locations, and one family even had to dig out a car from under fallen tree limbs.

The family said the weather "hit in a flash" and left the trees all over the place. Neighbors said that thankfully no one was hurt.

Emergency officials in Hebron said they responded to reports of a tree that fell onto a home on Old Colchester Road as the storms moved through the area.

A lightning strike at Bradley International Airport caused some delays as well. Officials there said a bolt of lightning struck at the intersection of both runways, closing one of them.

Crews were out on the runway removing debris that was left in the wake of the strike.

The runway was closed at the time, but the airport remained open.
