BERLIN, CT (WFSB/AP) -
Connecticut Light & Power is reporting that nearly 35,000 customers are without power due to severe storms that swept through the state on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials said the number of customers without power on Wednesday afternoon represents about 2 percent of its 1.2 million customers.
United Illuminating, the smaller of Connecticut's two major utilities, reported only a few outages.
Large hail was reported in communities across Connecticut including Newington, Cromwell, Middletown, and Litchfield.
In addition to the hail, strong winds and knocked trees over bringing power lines with them. Reports of trees down have been made in places like New Britain, Litchfield, Harwinton, Portland and Middletown.
