Massive cleanup continues after Wednesday's severe storms

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) -

Crews across Connecticut are continuing to clean up after severe weather rolled through the state bringing down trees and leaving nearly 35,000 Connecticut Light & Power customers in the dark.

Most people have had power restored, but there is still plenty of work that needs to be done.

Along Main Street and Nooks Hill Road in Cromwell, utility crews have been hard at work restoring power, telephone and cable services.

Tree service companies have been working tirelessly to cut downed trees and have been loading them into wood chippers.

Mother Nature hasn't made it easy for cleanup crews. From homes to businesses, it seems like no one was spared from the destruction left in the wake of the severe weather.

"He called and was like, 'your house is on TV,'" said Cromwell resident Drina Beaulieu. "That's how we found out."

A massive 70-foot black walnut tree belonging to Beaulieu's neighbors came right up out of the ground, swallowing up her house across the street.

With the tree now cut up and put to the side, damage could be seen on the roof siding and windows of the home.

"I was coming up Main Street, and it's like, jeez, the house seems open; haven't seen it like this and then I see the telephone pole sheared in half and the tree on Drina's porch. It seemed like it was giving it a big hug," said neighbor Judy Salamacha.

That includes Kevin Delaney's front and backyard on Main Street. His house made it through OK, but part of his deck is gone underneath the weight of a huge pine.

"I have to leave on a trip in a couple of days," Delaney said. "I don't know. We need to get somebody in here and clean it all up."

Portland officials also reported several down trees along Old Marlborough Road, and lightning caused damage to the first tee of the Portland Golf Course.

The Danbury mayor also reported serious damage to parts of town with trees and power lines down.

Bradley International Airport had to close two runways for about half an hour Wednesday after lightning struck them at an intersection leaving debris behind.
