HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
United States and Connecticut flags have been lowered to half-staff in honor of the 12 people that were shot and killed at a Colorado movie theater on Friday.
United States President Barack Obama issued the proclamation on Friday.
"By the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, July 25, 2012," the proclamation said.
In addition, Obama said flags will be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
Gov. Dannel Malloy responded to the proclamation by ordering all state flags to also be flown at half-staff in recognition of the tragedy in Colorado.
"What happened in Colorado is a traumatic and terrible event - the victims and their families are in our prayers today, and our thoughts are with the people of Colorado. We join them in their anguish and their outrage at this senseless act of violence, and offer our support during this very difficult time," Malloy said.
The flags will be raised to full staff on July 25.
