STONINGTON, CT (WFSB) -
An unusual sight in Stonington drew dozens of people to Long Island Sound on Monday morning to catch a glimpse of a dead humpback whale that washed ashore.
A large crowd gathered just a few feet from the water off Lord's Point to see the 20-foot humpback whale that was found dead on the beach.
Marine biologists at the Mystic Aquarium said they believe the whale has been dead for days and likely washed ashore via Fisher's Island.
"As soon as I heard about it, I couldn't believe it," said resident Megan Boord. "It's kind of amazing to see something like this around here."
Word of the dead whale's arrival spread fast.
"I quickly came home, took off my rollerblades and hopped on our bikes and came down to take some pictures," said resident Jim Merrick.
Scientists are investigation what happened, and said they will get the answers they need once a necropsy or autopsy on the animal is conducted at a different beach.
The necropsy could take weeks to complete.
