HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for three counties in Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon.
The severe thunderstorm watch was posted for:
- Hartford County
- Tolland County
- Windham County
The severe thunderstorm watch was posted until 8 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
National Weather Service officials said people should be on the lookout for threatening weather and to pay attention to any severe weather warnings that may be issued.
Damaging winds and hail were expected to be the primary threats, although officials were reminding residents that severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
By definition, a severe thunderstorm is a storm that produces one inch hail or larger in diameter, and/or winds equal to or greater than 58 miles an hour.
The size of the watch can vary depending on the type of weather situation that's expected.
