WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
A West Haven man was punched in the face after refusing to allow two men selling magazines in his house during Thursday night's storm.
Police said the two men went to a home on Pheasant Road around 8 p.m. to allegedly sell the magazines, but police said they didn't have any permits, and appeared to be up to something else.
West Haven police said one of the men asked the homeowner if he could come inside to get out of the pouring rain, but the homeowner refused.
"He hadn't even started his sales pitch," the unidentified homeowner said. "I said, 'I don't want anything. Thank you very much.' and then he looked me in the eyes and said, 'you afraid?'"
That's when one of the men punched him right in the face.
Truman Tart, 24, of New Haven, was arrested and charged with assault and breach of peace.
According to police, Tart has an extensive criminal history with numerous felony arrests around the country.
West Haven police said this is not the first incident they've had involving solicitors with extensive criminal backgrounds. The city has an ordinance prohibiting solicitors from selling without a permit.
Residents are urged to call police when solicitors are seen in neighborhoods.
