Firefighters in Springfield have been battling a large blaze in a former industrial building.
There are no reports of any serious injuries in the fire that burned Friday morning at the former HBA Cast Products on Liberty Street.
Flames at one point were shooting some 40 feet into the air and smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles. Several streets have been closed and Mayor Domenic Sarno told reporters the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency had been called in to assist.
Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger says chemicals were found in the building in June when officials shut down an illegal rooming house operating at the site. It was unclear if any of the chemicals were still present.
There was no immediate word on how the fire started.
