Fire at Wallingford apartment building forces dozens to evacuate

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of elderly residents were forced to evacuate when their apartment building caught fire in Wallingford early Saturday morning.

Firefighters said the flames broke out at the Silver Pond Apartments on Center Street at 4:50 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews said the apartment that caught fire was full of flames, which were spilling out into the hallway of the building.  The person inside that apartment was taken to the hospital.  That person's condition is not known at this time.

Firefighters said 75 to 80 residents were evacuated while they fought the flames.  They say most residents are elderly and it took them some time to get everyone out of the building.  The displaced residents were taken to the Wallingford senior center. The American Red Cross is also assisting more than a dozen people who were displaced by the fire.

One apartment was gutted by the fire, and the rest of the building suffered smoke and water damage.  Some residents are being allowed to return to their apartments.  Firefighters say the apartment management company has a 15 person crew on scene to start working to clean up the damage.

Wallingford's fire marshal will investigate today to determine what started the fire.
