EAST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
A bicyclist has been killed in East Haven after being hit by a minivan on Coe Avenue, according to police.
Just before noon, the East Haven Police Department received word of the serious motor vehicle accident near Ocean Port Market.
The initial investigation showed that a Toyota Sienna minivan, which is owned by Sarah, Inc., of Guilford, was traveling south on Coe Avenue collided with a bicyclist, and then collided with a utility pole and flipped over.
"The swerve happened and the guy tried to move out of the way but he ended up going in front of the car," said witness Wesley Piche. "Then it hit him. He went into the air, and the bike went under the car and the car hit the telephone pole and tipped over."
Sarah Inc., provides advocacy, services and support for people with intellectual and other disabilities and to promoting opportunities for full inclusion in their communities, according to the website.
The bicyclist, who has not been identified pending notification of his family, was brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Three passengers from the minivan were also brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital and St. Raphael's Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Coe Avenue was closed between Dewey Avenue and Cold Spring Avenue, as well as the intersection of Coe Avenue and Soundview Avenue for an investigation and to repair the utility pole.
The East Haven Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is also investigating.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police.
No other information has been released.
