NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
Detectives in New Haven are investigating the city's 11th homicide of the year.
Police said several 911 calls were made around 3:30 a.m. after several shots rang out on Atwater Street in the Fairhaven section of the city.
"I heard four gunshots and then someone screaming, 'Don't kill me! Don't kill me,'" said New Haven resident Gloria Cruz.
When police arrived, they said they found the victim, identified as Reuben Gonzalez, 27, in the area of 47 Atwater St., and he was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Throughout the morning, police walked along the block and went door-to-door asking if they heard or saw anything.
Police loaded up brown paper bags with evidence, first a baseball hat near a pool of blood, and then a pack of cigarettes resting on the trunk of a car.
For Cruz, the flashing lights and the yellow crime tape bring back some painful memories.
She said Thursday will mark the four-year anniversary of losing her son to street violence.
"He's somebody's son," she said. He has to have a mother somewhere. I feel sorry for the pain she's feeling and it's something that will never leave you. It's four years and it's still fresh in my heart."
Police said Gonzalez was likely in the process of being robbed before being shot and killed. But, police said, the shooting remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the homicide should call police.
