SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Michael Wingfield, 35, of Longfellow Terrace and 70 Harrison Ave., in Springfield was arraigned in Springfield District Court Tuesday morning.

District Court Judge William J. Boyle ordered Wingfield  to be held in lieu of $250,000 cash and  $1 million surety.

Friday night, Wingfield struck Ashley Ballester on Sumner Avenue in Springfield.

At the time she was hit, Ballester was pushing her daughter Lailani, who is just shy of her second birthday, across the busy street. Lailani remains in intensive care at Baystate Medical Center.

A friend of Ballester told CBS 3 that she was also one month pregnant with a second child, but there was no mention of Ballester's pregnancy during the arraignment.

However, Wingfield did face several other charges during his court appearance, including motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death, and operating a vehicle without a license.

Wingfield is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 29.
