NAUGATUCK, CT (WFSB) -
Naugatuck residents are cleaning up after flash flooding caused damage in the town on Wednesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for northern New Haven County, including Naugatuck, at about 2:30 p.m. after a slow-moving thunderstorm dropped more than four inches of rain in a short period of time.
On Wednesday, Naugatuck Mayor Robert Mezzo issued a state of emergency and toured hard hit areas with Gov. Dannel Malloy.
Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro said she spoke with the mayor and governor about the flooding and said her staff would be evaluating damage and stands ready to assist if needed.
"The flooding caused by today's rainfall has caused a still-unknown amount of property damage, but we can all be thankful that the worst appears to be over and the situation has stabilized," DeLauro said in a written statement.

Several people in Naugatuck sent in photos and videos of the flooding on Morning Dove Road, Pond Street and South Main Street.
An apartment building on Prospect Street was evacuated after the flash floods. Naugatuck police said the residents were brought to the Naugatuck Senior Center, where the Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross set up a shelter.
It was unknown when residents would be allowed to return.
The parking lot at the Cosmetology Center on Rubber Avenue buckled under the pressure of the rains, according to the owner's daughter, and most of the lot was washed away.
NWS officials said runoff from the rain caused flooding of small creeks and streams, highways and underpasses.
