The man who set off a campus alert at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point and later killed himself had just learned he was the target of a police investigation.
Unnamed sources said the investigation into Timothy Devine involved minors at the gym he owned in Groton.
Crossfit, which is located on Bridge Street, has been closed since Devine's death.
Devine set off a huge response from state and UConn police at the campus when police found him armed with a gun that he refused to drop.
Even with the efforts of negotiators over a period of nearly four hours, Devine, 30, ended up shooting and killing himself.
He was a firefighter for four years with the Poquonock Bridge Fire Department.
