HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A Hartford firefighter has been placed on leave after he was arrested on Thursday.

Around 6 p.m. Thursday, detectives from the Hartford Police Department's Vice and Narcotics Division, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team, Connecticut State Police and the FBI executed a warrant at the home of Rafael Diaz.

At the Douglas Street home, police said they found:

  • 3.8 ounces of cocaine
  • 1.4 ounces of marijuana
  • 1 ounce of hallucinogenic mushrooms
  • 39 ecstasy pills
  • A loaded pistol
  • $1,800 in cash

Police said everything was seized from the apartment as a result of the investigation.

"It's a shock to me and the entire department," said Hartford Fire Chief Edward Casaras.

Casaras said Diaz was placed on paid administrative leave as of 7 p.m. Thursday pending an investigation.

"It's a criminal matter, and an investigation is ongoing," he said. "The department will do what is right."

Diaz was arrested on multiple charges including:

  • Possession of narcotics
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession with the intent to sell narcotics
  • Possession with the intent to sell narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school
  • Operating a drug factory

"As the investigation is ongoing there will be no further comment by the department until such a time as the investigation is completed," said Hartford Police Chief James Rovella.
