WESTPORT, CT (WFSB) -

Two people were rescued, after police said the yacht they were on struck a reef near the shore in Westport.

Police said they responded to the mayday distress call from the vessel, around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

According to police, the operator said the boat had struck a reef that projects eastward from Cockenoe Island, which is just off the shore of Westport.

Crews from Norwalk Fire's Marine Unit, as well as Westport Marine police responded to the call, and worked to prevent the yacht from sinking using dewatering pumps. The vessel was then towed to Cove marina in Norwalk.

Two people were removed safely from the yacht, according to Norwalk fire officials.

The incident remains under investigation by Westport and Norwalk officials.
