House fire in Plainville sends three to the hospital

PLAINVILLE, CT (WFSB) -

Three people were sent to the hospital, including one firefighter, after an early morning fire in Plainville.

Crews were called out to the home on the corner of Washington and West Main streets shortly before 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.

"When we arrived, we had heavy fire on the first floor," said Plainville Fire Chief Ray Swanson. "One person was outside the building and one person was inside the building, which we removed."

A man managed to escape the fire, and he was brought to New Britain Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"I know his girlfriend, Marie," said neighbor Greg Lynt. "She got burned up pretty good. I'm just going to say a prayer and hopes she's OK."

Firefighters said they had to go into the building and pull a woman from the first floor. She was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital's Burn Unit. A firefighter who went into the burning building was also treated and released at New Britain Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are now looking for a cause of the fire.

As crews cleaned up, it wrapped up a busy day for firefighters in Plainville. From Sunday into Monday, there were two other fires and Swanson said the intense heat from the fires and the high temperatures was taking a toll on many.

"This is our third fire today," he said. "We had two other structure fires. Our guys are pretty whooped and the heat is adding to it."

Plainville's fire marshall is investigating, as well as the state's fire marshall.
