A former Chiefs pro bowler is working to make sure student athletes are safe this school year.
With so much talk and concern about athletes and head trauma, former Chief Will Shields and his sports fitness facility, 68 Inside Sports, is doing something to help parents and young athletes, using the Dynavision Baseline Testing machine or D2.
D2 gives the athlete and parents a baseline score after a series of motor skills tests, through vision and movement reaction times. Once they get their score, if the athlete suffers a concussion later, the post-injury test score can be compared to their baseline score in determining when it's OK to return to the field of play. Officials hope the machine helps so players don't return too soon, risking another concussion.
"Most people don't realize that your secondary concussion can come from not being hit in the head. It could be a hit in the ribs or a hit in the back or anything else, because it still releases endorphins just like if you did have that brain concussion. It doesn't know exactly if it was hit there or if it was something else," Shields said.
The scores are kept in a computer database so they're readily available to the family and specialists. This is also the same system used by teams from the National Football League, National Hockey League, pro soccer and the NCAA.
Testing is also Saturday at Outside-In Sports Facility. It will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The facility is at 6211 B. North West Kelly Dr. in Parkville, MO. The test costs $5.
