New Britain police search for suspect involved in cruiser crash

NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

New Britain police are on the lookout for suspect they pursued on and off in the Hardware City who then appears to have caused a pair of accidents, one involving a police cruiser.

The incident took place near the intersection of Hart and Lincoln streets. According to police, a woman reported her car stolen to New Britain police around 4 p.m. The woman said her ex-boyfriend, Jose Marcano, stole her Honda Civic from her.

New Britain police said an officer spotted Marcano in the blue Honda and tried to stop him. Police said Marcano then fled. Police say it appears that the stolen vehicle was then involved in an accident with a pickup truck. The operator of the stolen car then fled the scene of that accident.

The operator of the pickup truck apparently attempted to follow the stolen Honda, and when the pickup truck reached the intersection of Lincoln Street and Hart Street it crashed into a New Britain Police Department marked cruiser that was passing through the intersection.

The impact caused the cruiser to cross into the oncoming lane on Hart Street, striking another SUV. Preliminary investigation indicates that the cruiser had the right of way, and was not in violation of any traffic-control signal.

Officers said they followed for a little while, but then called it off because they were on small streets and someone could have been hurt.

Police are still searching for Marcano and the blue Honda Civic bearing CT registration 594-XWV. Marcano is wanted on multiple failure to appear warrants from several towns.

Anyone with information regarding accident, the location of the stolen car, or the location of Marcano is asked to call the New Britain Police Department at 860-826-3000.
