COVENTRY, CT (WFSB) -

Some residents in the Forest Road area of Coventry were evacuated on Tuesday while police investigated what they called a "dangerous situation" inside a home.

Police said they received a call just before 11 a.m. from a woman who said her husband was despondent and made threatening statements towards himself.

When police arrived they were not able to make contact with the 69-year-old man inside the house.

Police set up a command post at Robertson School on Cross Street and the regional SWAT team was called to the scene.

When police entered the home around 2 p.m., they found the man dead in the basement from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have not said what made the man so upset, but neighbors said he may have been in poor health.

The man's identity has not been released.
