Wild weather causes problems in Connecticut communities

Posted: Updated:
NEWINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A strong thunderstorm moved through several areas of the state Thursday morning causing headaches in several communities.

In Newington, a bolt of lightning split a tree in half sending shards of bark flying through the air and missing homes by mere inches.

That bolt of lightning is also to blame for causing a strong odor of natural gas near 38 Church St.

Connecticut Natural Gas investigated the odor and residents in the area were given the all clear and were out of the woods.

That wasn't the case for residents in Farmington.

In that town, a tree topped over during the storm and landed on top of a car that was parked in the driveway. The base of the tree landed on the roof of the car.

And in Middlefield, a large oak tree was uprooted and crashed across the road bringing utility wires down with it.

No injuries were reported.
