A former butler who tried to extort millions of dollars from philanthropist Anne H. Bass has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Emanuel Nicolescu was convicted of attempted extortion in connection with a 2007 home invasion in which masked intruders injected Bass and a companion with what they claimed was a deadly virus.
He was sentenced Friday in federal court in New Haven.
Nicolescu had been fired by Bass about a year before three men broke into her house in western Connecticut in April 2007. The intruders refused to provide an antidote for the injection unless Bass turned over $8.5 million, but the substance turned out to be harmless.
Nicolescu is the only person who has been arrested for the crime.
