WASHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -
A propane tank leak in Washington caused an explosion early Sunday morning.
Officials from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection told Eyewitness News that a car drove into a tank containing 1,000 gallons of propane fuel, causing the tank to leak.
Officials said it happened just before 2 a.m. in the area of 3 Bryan Plaza.
According to state officials, the gas made its way inside the Washington town hall and found an ignition source, causing an explosion inside the building. Officials did not comment on the size of the explosion or how serious the damage was.
Local firefighters, state police and DEEP officials were called in to monitor the tank, which officials said would need to be vented.
Officials said the venting process could take several days.
Washington's First Selectman said the town hall will remain closed on Monday.
