New Haven man charged with selling drugs to undercover officers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) -

Undercover state police troopers arrested a New Haven man who sold them crack cocaine Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force were eating lunch at a restaurant on Chapel Street when they were approached by a panhandler. He told police that he could get them drugs in exchange for beer and money. 

After the panhandler made a phone call, Richard Wells, 24, of Winthrop Avenue, arrived and handed the officers drugs, police said. Officers arrested Wells and seized 17 bags of crack cocaine, four bags of marijuana and $102. 

Wells was charged with possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell, possession of a narcotic substance within 1,500 feet of school and sale a narcotic substance as well as several drug charges.

He is expected to appear in Superior Court in New Haven in the near future.

The panhandler was not arrested, pending further investigation.
