HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Water has been fully restored to businesses along Airport Road in Hartford after four water main breaks left dozens without water Thursday.
Officials said the breaks occurred after a motorist crashed into a hydrant in the area Thursday afternoon.
In total, 31 businesses are without water, according to officials from the Metropolitan District Commission. The Wendy's in the area cannot serve customers. The Citgo gas station on Airport Road cannot sell gas at this time, however the store is open.
"It's rough," said Kathy Rodriguez, who runs the Citgo gas station. "Airport road has been an issue for a very long time. It's almost like New York City down this road."
Airport Road was closed from Locust to Ledyard streets and also was closed from Ledyard to the I-91 overpass. Ledyard Street is shut down from Airport Road to Wethersfield Avenue.
MDC officials said the repairs were expected to take eight hours to complete, however they kept encountering additional issues and breaks as they worked on repairing the initial ones.
According to MDC officials, there is a safety valve on the hydrant, which prevents it from spilling out. When the valve is shut, which happened during the crash, hammering in the pipes occurs.
The pressure from the pipes hammering caused the water mains to break.
All the breaks were fixed and water was fully restored shortly after 2 a.m. MDC officials said.
