Drunken driving arrest in New Haven leads to discovery of handgun

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police arrested New Haven man after they found opened beer bottles and a handgun in his vehicle Wednesday night.

Demetrius Taylor, 43, was stopped near the intersection of Shelton Avenue and Hazel Street at 8:12 p.m. Police located an Iver Johnson .22 caliber pistol and multiple boxes of assorted ammunition in his pickup truck.

Police also found opened bottles of Natural Ice and New Amsterdam, which Taylor and his passenger admitted to drinking.

Taylor was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit, drinking while operating a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a defective windshield.

According to New Haven police, he has previously plead guilty to assault and narcotics charges among others.
