NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Haven man was arrested after police said he attacked his pregnant girlfriend after an argument Saturday morning.

Police were called to a home in the Fair Haven section of the city just before 11:30 a.m. When police arrived, the victim, who was not identified, told them that she was attacked by her boyfriend, Manuel Crespo, 25 after a verbal fight turned physical.

She told police that Crespo "pinned her down, spat at her face and suffocated her by holding his hand over her mouth while sitting on top of her."

Police discovered that Crespo was in possession of .45 caliber Desert Eagle handgun, which was taken by the officers after he was arrested. It is unclear if the suspect was ever in possession of the gun during the assault.

Crespo was charged with second-degree strangulation, second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree threatening, third-degree assault of a pregnant person and disorderly conduct.

The victim was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for an evaluation, but did not suffer any serious injuries, according to police.
