NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -
Emergency officials in Norwich said an armed man who had been involved in a standoff with police has surrendered.
Police were called to 34 Everett St. around 9 p.m. Monday after a complaint was made that fireworks were going off. But, police said, when they arrived at the home they were notified that a man, who would be later identified as Victor Jovenilli, 64, had barricaded himself in his home and was armed.
Norwich police secured the area and told residents to remain indoors while they attempted to speak with Jovenilli.
Jovenilli fired four shots and refused to leave his home, police said. The state police tactical team was called in and a friend, Bobby Angell, aided investigators.
"I was gonna go try to get my buddy out of the house before something happen, bad," he said.
Angell said he has known Jovenilli, who served three tours in Vietnam, since he was 6 and had talked with him last night.
According to Connecticut State Police, Jovenilli has been involved in standoffs with police in the past. Eyewitness News has discovered that he has more than half a dozen convictions including DUI to weapons charges.
No one was injured during the standoff.
