Bristol still recovering 1 year after Irene

Posted: Updated:

As cities and towns across Connecticut look back on the one-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene, some are looking ahead and taking steps to make sure the major damage left in its wake doesn't happen again.

One year ago, rains from Irene made the Pequabuck River to rise over its banks and flooded Bristol.

A year later, the city is still addressing some needs along with teaming up with two neighboring communities to see what can be done to prevent as much damage as possible.

Bristol Mayor Art Ward said just the staffing for the cleanup and repair work from Irene cost the city more than $600,000. Of that, the city will receive roughly $300,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Ward said federal reimbursement money continues to come in pieces.

As the city moves forward, it recently teamed up with Plainville and Plymouth to try and received a federal grant that would allow for a full study to come up with ways to deal with future flooding.

"The main thing is we have the opportunity to see exactly where the problem areas are, and together with the state and federal government to address them," Ward said.
