GROTON, CT (WFSB) -
An elderly man was bitten by a dog trying to protect his own dog from being attacked Tuesday morning in Groton.
Police were called to Calvin Burrows Field on South Road just before 10:30 a.m. after a man in his 70s was bitten by a pit bull mix, according to Lt. John W. Varone. The dog was taken into custody and is under quarantine pending the investigation, he added.
The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery, Varone said.
The victim's dog suffered traumatic injuries was taken to Companion Animal Hospital where it is undergoing treatment for its injuries, Varone said.
Residents on South Road have seen dogs running loose in the neighborhood, but never heard of any attacks.
"I see loose dogs around here sometimes they are usually running into someone's yard with the owner chasing after it," said Mike Caronia Jr. of Groton.
The incident is being actively investigated by police, however no arrests have been made. The owners of the pit bull mix are cooperating with police.
