NORTH HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Friends, family members and classmates remembered the life of a 16-year-old who was killed when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle Wednesday night.

According to family members, Connor Kusmit was struck on Route 22, also known as Clintonville Road, near Country Way. Police and emergency crews responded to the area at about 5:10 p.m.  He was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

"The bike ended up on a front lawn over there and one of the tires ended up over here," said Anthony Furino of North Haven. "There were pieces of stuff all over."

Furino was at home when the accident occurred outside of his window.

"Actually we heard the screech, crash and heard her keep going," he said. "That's when we ran outside."

According to state statistics, there were 20 crashes on Route 22 in 2008, 11 in 2009 and four in 2010. No one was killed in any of the crashes; however, more than 20 involved property damage. One crash in 2008 involved a bicycle.

"Honestly there are a lot of accidents on this street," Furino said. "My cousin got into two of them right here pulling in driveway because people go too quick down here."

A moment of silence was held at North Haven High School where Kusmit attended. He was a well-liked and intelligent student, according to friends.

The South Central Regional Traffic Unit is conducting the motor vehicle accident investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is encouraged to contact the North Haven Police Department at 203-239-5321 extension 224.
