LISBON, CT (WFSB) -

Fire crews used a large wrecker to pull an SUV from Shetucket River after the vehicle went into the water Thursday morning.

According to fire officials, a man identified as Vance Coffin was preparing to go kayaking in the river just before noon when his SUV slipped into gear and rolled forward into the body of water. The 2004 Lexus SUV went into the water next to the boat ramp in Lisbon.

"It floated for a while with my kayak still on top, and sunk," Coffin said. "My wife is going to kill me."

Coffin told fire officials that he was not injured and refused medical attention.

Firefighters from Yantic were training close to where the incident occurred and were on scene in seconds. Firefighters from Lisbon and Taftville as well as dive teams from nearby departments assisted with the incident.
